HOW TO PERFORM A VISUAL METER CHECK

Here are a few steps and safety measures to perform a quick visual meter check that can help expedite the restoration process when an outage occurs.

STEP 1: CHECK POWER SOURCES

  • Check your breaker panel for any breaker that may have tripped off.
  • Check for visible electrical damage to your meter base. If you see any damage, call us.
  • Check your surroundings. If any conductors or wires are down, stay back. Call 911 immediately.

STEP 2: CHECK DISPLAY

If breakers are not tripped (power on), check the status of the display on your meter. It will help you determine the status of power in your home. If there is no display showing on the meter, your power may be out.

STEP 3: CONTACT ONCOR

If the power is still out, have the last seven digits of your ESI ID number (located on your electric bill) ready and contact us via text or phone.

  • Meter Accuracy Meter Accuracy

    METER ACCURACY

Oncor uses advanced meters manufactured by Landis+Gyr, a leader in smart-grid technology that certifies meters to a higher standard of accuracy than required by market rules. In addition, Oncor operates according to rigorous accuracy criteria that are more stringent than industry standards. Our quality control initiatives require the manufacturer to test all meters to ensure compliance before shipment. Oncor also tests a number of meters prior to installation. Oncor also implements an in-service testing program to ensure that once meters are installed, they remain accurate. Additionally, Oncor's Advanced Metering System continually monitors meters 24/7.

  • Meter Security Meter Security

    METER SECURITY

Working with security experts, Oncor ensures safe and secure service for our customers. Our advanced meters are fully encrypted in a manner comparable to the system used by banks to protect financial information. We take a proactive approach to data security, with a full-time security team that monitors and addresses possible issues. We also work closely with government experts to develop best practices regarding cyber security. As a Texas company, we are subject to Texas state laws and Public Utility Commission of Texas rules that prohibit utilities from providing information to any third party other than retail electric providers, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas or customer-authorized entities.

  • Meter Safety Meter Safety

    METER SAFETY

The radio frequency (RF) signals emitted from smart meters are far lower than those emitted by common devices like mobile phones, baby monitors, and microwave ovens. Oncor strictly adheres to standards for RF advanced meter networks set by the Federal Communications Commission, the International Electrotechnical Commission, and the American National Standards Institute. No credible scientific studies link RF signals from advanced meters to adverse health risks, and the meter's location outside the home further diminishes the intensity of the meter's intermittent signal.
