More people are choosing solar, battery storage, and other onsite sources of energy, also called Distributed Generation (DG) or Distributed Energy Resources (DER). They are interested in reducing their energy usage and saving money on their electric bill. With DER, some electricity comes from small sources at a home or business, which helps reduce electricity consumption from the grid. Along with solar and battery storage, natural gas-fueled microturbines, diesel-fueled generators, and landfill gas are common types of DER. Unlike emergency generators or other off-grid power systems that serve an isolated load and are not connected to the Oncor grid, DER function in parallel with the Oncor grid or separately. DER generally have a capacity less than 10 MW and are connected to the grid at a voltage less than 60 kilovolts (kV). We work cooperatively with customers—and customers’ designated representatives—to ensure a safe and reliable interconnection of DER to our system.
Oncor can answer your questions about distributed generation, interconnection, and more. Call us at
