Customers Encouraged to Check Home Electric Equipment in Case Additional Repairs are Required
Oncor teams are continuing to respond to the severe weather that moved through our service area overnight and into this morning, restoring nearly 55,000 customers by 10:00 a.m. Monday morning from a peak outage amount of approximately 94,000 around midnight. Damage assessment, tree trimming, construction and restoration teams will work around the clock to address the remaining outages as quickly and safely as possible. We recognize the challenges of being without power and greatly appreciate our customers’ patience as this work continues.
Multiple rounds of thunderstorms across the state produced widespread damaging winds, some in excess of 80 mph, as well as hail, intense lightning and possible tornadoes. Impacts of these storms stretched as far west as Midland, north to the Red River, down to Central Texas and eastward through Tyler and Lufkin, where the main band of the storm system exited the Oncor service territory around 7:00 a.m. this morning. Oncor team members and contractors were prepared to respond before the storm system’s arrival and immediately deployed as soon as weather conditions safely allowed them to begin damage evaluation and restoration efforts.
Oncor’s damage evaluation process includes assessing areas of high impact to check the condition of poles, wires, transformers, and more to ensure the right teams and equipment will be assigned to each outage location. This work also helps Oncor more accurately review and determine the estimated time for power to be restored for impacted customers. The estimated time of restoration may vary based on the extent of damage to equipment, how many specialized crews may be needed to complete repairs -for example: tree trimming, construction and lineworker teams-, if there are multiple damage locations along a power line, additional weather impacts and more.
Additional storms are possible in some areas of the Oncor service area later today, which may hinder restoration efforts and cause additional outages. Oncor personnel will be ready to respond to any new outages and will continue ongoing restoration efforts for as long as safely possible. Flooding may also cause delays and access challenges for our field resources.
Customers are encouraged to safely check their home or business electric equipment, such as the meter base or weatherhead, to make sure it has not been damaged or pulled off as the result of the severe storms or winds. If this equipment is damaged, customers will need to contact a licensed electrician to make the necessary repairs. Oncor will not be able to safely reconnect or restore power until these repairs are completed and is unable to repair electric equipment it does not own. A city inspection may also be required before service can be restored.
Safety for Oncor’s customers and employees is our top priority. Anyone who sees Oncor personnel or support staff working is asked to please give them ample space to ensure their own safety and that of our workers. Customers are also urged to stay weather-aware and keep these important safety tips in mind:
