DALLAS (Sept. 19, 2007) – Today, Oncor announced that its system has the largest broadband-over-power-line network in the nation.

“Installation of the BPL system started less than a year ago, and today we have the largest deployment in the United States,” said Jim Greer, Oncor’s vice president of asset management and engineering. “This accomplishment is evidence of Oncor’s commitment to investing in advanced technology to improve system reliability and customer service. This was the direction we set several years ago, and we continue to follow through with it.”

Designed, built and operated by telecommunications provider CURRENT Group, the broadband-over-power-line network now reaches more than 100,000 homes in the Dallas area, with more locations being added every week. 

“A technology-enabled grid will help Oncor better serve the people who live and work in the more than 400 communities across our system,” Greer said. “By working with CURRENT to bring broadband-over-power-line technology to Oncor’s system, Oncor is continuing to use technology to achieve its objective of industry-leading performance.”

Through the broadband-over-power-line network, Oncor is able to monitor its electric delivery system, obtaining a steady stream of data that can be analyzed for potential problems. Once a problem is pinpointed, Oncor dispatches operations personnel to investigate the irregularity before it can become an outage or other service issue. Issues are often resolved before consumers even realize that there was a problem.

Greer was a keynote speaker at the United Power Line Council’s Broadband Over Power Line conference in Dallas, which started yesterday and lasts through Friday.
