Oncor works with outside security experts to ensure reliable and safe service for all Oncor customers.
Some of these measures include:
- Advanced meters use a fully encrypted (128-bit) security system, comparable to systems used by banks to protect sensitive financial information.
- A full-time security team that continually monitors and addresses any security alert.
- A multi-layered, proactive approach to data security.
Oncor also works closely on cyber security issues with state and national experts such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and others to develop best practices for the industry. Customer privacy is important to our company and to Texas. State law and the Public Utility Commission of Texas rules prohibit utilities from providing proprietary customer data to any third party, except retail electric providers, ERCOT or other entities expressly authorized by the customer.
"Security – whether it’s in utilities, banking or another industry – is an ever-changing endeavor. Therefore, it’s essential to always be on guard. Oncor is constantly monitoring, testing and moving to the next level."
– Jim Greer, Chief Operating Officer, Oncor
